Tip prompt outside food service
A tip was requested at a retail store, a medical or dental office, a repair shop, a rent or utility payment, or another setting where tipping is not customary.
The prompt is the same software regardless of the business behind the counter. This record documents where it appeared.

Law
The federal baseline
No federal law requires or forbids a tip prompt at checkout. If money collected as a "tip" is retained by the business rather than paid to workers, the federal tip-ownership rule and federal and state deceptive-practice laws may apply.
